6 yard builder skip hire size guidance

The 6 yard Builders skip is one of the two most common skips hired in the UK. The other most popular skip being the 8 yard skip – which confusingly is also regularly referred to as a builders skip. Both ‘builders skips’ are ideal for a very wide range of waste projects, including getting rid of kitchen and other home renovation waste and also rubbish from clearouts of gardens, garages or lofts.

One of the most popular sizes, perfect for medium sized projects

The builders skip is the skip we are all used to seeing in residential streets. Some will be 6 yards and others 8 yards. Councils generally do not allow skips of any larger size on the road, so that is why hiring a builders skip is so popular. Whether you hire a 6 yard skip or 8 yard depends on the space you have available and the amount of waste you need to get rid of. If in doubt, we recommend hiring the slightly larger one assuming you have sufficient space to park it, because you are bound to find some more things you want to throw out once the skip arrives. A 6 yard skip holds approximately 50-60 filled bin bags.Check out our skip size guide for a handy comparison of all the skips we offer.

Just so you know – we used a car in the image above to help give you some sense of the scale of a 6 yard skip, but you cannot dispose of tyres or electrical goods in a skip. We’re just testing your concentration. For a more comprehensive and helpful list on what you’re allowed to put in a skip, visit our page: What can I put in a skip?
